Skales Early Life and Education

Raoul John Njeng-Njeng was born in Kaduna State on April 1, 1991. The initials SKALES stand for Seek Knowledge Acquire Large Entrepreneurial Skills in his professional name. Although he is from Edo state, his mother raised him by herself in Kaduna state. Young Skales studied at the University of Jos but afterwards transferred to Lead City University in Ibadan. He has a degree in Office Management and Technology from Lead City.

Skales Career

Skales frequented his mother's tape shop, where he first developed an interest in music. While a student at the University of Jos, he met producers Jeremiah Gyang and Jesse Jagz (UNIJOS). He participated in the Zain Tru Search Competition at Unijos and achieved first place in the North Central section of the competition.

In his junior year, Skales left UNIJOS to enroll at Lead City University, where he earned a degree in office management and technology. To rave reviews, his debut single "Must Shine" was released.

Skales characterized himself as an entertainer whose music is influenced by his environment in an interview with This Day newspaper in 2013. Kanye West's "Jesus Walks" served as inspiration for his 2009 album, "Heading for a Grammy." His personal struggles influenced the song's direction, which is a homage to self-empowerment.

Following a 2009 encounter with Banky W, Skales agreed to a record deal with E.M.E. He concurrently released the singles "Mukulu" and "Keresimesi." Both songs were created by Sarz and made available through the group. Clarence Peters directed the music video for the later song, which was posted to YouTube on November 28, 2011.

Skales was one of the featured performers on Empire Mates State of Mind, the debut album by E.M.E. (2012). On five of the album's seven hits, he worked with Banky W, Wizkid, Shaydee, Niyola, and DJ Xclusive. On the EME US Tour, which began on July 4 and finished on September 2, 2012, he performed alongside some of the above-mentioned performers.

A number of cities, including Houston, Dallas, Toronto, Vancouver, New York City, Providence, Calgary, Atlanta, Washington, DC, and Chicago, hosted performances by E.M.E performers. In 2012, Skales accompanied Wizkid on his London tour. He took the stage during Felabration 2013, a biennial celebration honoring Fela Kuti, on October 17, 2013.

The Vanguard newspaper stated in February 2014 that Skales departed E.M.E after his four-year recording deal expired. Executives at E.M.E. refused to extend his contract because they felt they weren't being compensated for their investment in him.

Skales launched his own musical label, OHK Music, in May 2014. Producer Drey Beatz resides on the label, which also has ties to other Nigerian musicians. He released "Shake Body," the lead single from his debut studio album Man of the Year, on May 6, 2014. It was produced by Jay Pizzle. On July 22, 2014, the song's accompanying music video was posted to YouTube.

Skales announced the Shake Body video contest in order to promote the single. According to rumors, Skales left E.M.E. and inked a record deal with Timaya's Dem Mama Records. Skales refuted the rumors and asserted that he had not signed with Dem Mama Records in February 2014.
