Fresh protest loom over rejection of old naira notes in Ibadan [video]

In the early hours of Wednesday, residents of Ibadan, the vibrant capital of Oyo State, expressed their frustration over the current economic challenges bedeviling Nigeria by staging another protest. This time, the focus was on the scarcity of both the Nigerian Naira currency and fuel. The protesters blocked major roads within the Eleyele area, disrupting commercial activities and causing a massive traffic gridlock.

The protest was largely motivated by the hardship being faced by commercial drivers who have refused to accept old Naira notes due to the ongoing inflation crisis. The hike in the price of premium motor spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, has also added to their woes. In a bid to amplify their grievances, the protesters made bonfires of disused tires on both sides of the highway, adding to the already tense atmosphere.

Speaking to journalists, some of the protesters expressed their frustrations, describing the current cash crunch as a source of serious pain and agony. Many bank customers are finding it difficult to access their money due to bank closures and non-functioning Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in Eleyele and Apete areas.

It is not the first time Ibadan residents have protested over the ongoing Naira crisis. Earlier this month, angry protesters took to the streets of Ibadan, with demonstrations spreading to other major areas, including Agodi-Secretariat, Iwo road, Idi Ape, and Bodija. What started as a peaceful protest quickly escalated when some of the youth and traders began burning tires and barricading roads. The situation quickly spiraled out of control, with the office of the Oyo State Governor and some commercial banks being attacked.

As the situation persists, it is important for the government to take decisive action to alleviate the suffering of the masses. It is critical that measures be taken to restore the value of the Naira and ensure adequate fuel supply across the country. It is hoped that peaceful means will be used to express grievances, and that the government will take the necessary steps to address these issues.
