SA Police Minister, Bheki Cele reveals why he didn’t visit AKA’s murder scene

Bheki Cele, South Africa's esteemed Police Minister, has recently come under fire for his decision not to visit the scene of Kiernan Forbes' tragic murder. Forbes, known by his stage name AKA, was brutally assassinated alongside his friend Tebello "Tibz" Motsoane on Durban's bustling Florida Road over a week ago. Despite criticism from some corners of the public, Cele has staunchly defended his choice, citing a conversation with AKA's father as the reason he chose not to visit the scene of the crime.

“We don’t really go for cameras. There are many places where we go without cameras. Mostly where we go we are invited by communities,” he explained during the presentation of the quarterly crime stats.

“There was no need to go to this one because when we received the information at 11 pm, we were on the phone with the provincial commissioner talking about the team he put together, led by Brig [Vela] Cele, one of the best we have. He is one of the top investigators.”

In a recent interview, the minister shed light on his thought process, stating that he felt a personal conversation with AKA's father was more appropriate than a public visit to the murder scene. While some may disagree with his decision, Cele emphasized that he has been in constant communication with the family throughout the investigation and has been working tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice.

“The next morning, I was phoned by the family, requesting a few things to be done. I was on the phone with the family until 6 pm Saturday when the post-mortem was finished. On Sunday, I spoke at length with AKA’s father.

“Why would I have to go to the crime scene when we have taken on board the family and they are very satisfied?”

KZN police commissioner gave an update on the investigation of AKA’s assassination.

“South Africans know we can’t discuss in detail cases we are investigating, especially because the only people who are supposed to get feedback are the families of the deceased. We can’t tell them through the media what is happening with our investigations.”

“We have not arrested anyone yet. We have, however, interviewed a number of people in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng,” said Mkhwanazi
