Man sentenced to Remand for defrauding a prostitute with fake alert in Ondo

A Magistrate Court in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, has ordered the remand of a suspect, Oni Samuel, at a correctional facility for allegedly defrauding a sex worker, Blessing Olaitan, of N120,000. This comes after men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, arraigned Samuel over the crime, which occurred on March 1, 2023, at the Alagbaka axis of the Akure metropolis.

Olaitan, who identified herself as a professional sex worker, told the court that Samuel collected the sum of N80,000 from her after engaging in sexual activity with her. According to her, the suspect promised to transfer the money to her, along with her professional fee of N15,000. However, she later discovered that the defendant used fraudulent means to transfer the money.

The defendant faced a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing. The charge sheet accused Samuel and others at large of stealing N120,000 from Olaitan, an offense punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code Law Cap 37, Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

During the arraignment, Samuel pleaded not guilty to the charges, while his defense counsel, Barrister E.O. Nifemi, requested that the court grant his client bail. However, the NSCDC prosecutor, Mr. David Ebriku, opposed the bail application, stating that Samuel might jump bail and pose a threat to society.

In his ruling, Magistrate Tope Aladejana granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in the same amount. The case was then adjourned until April 17, 2023, for further hearing.
