Thomas Beatie made headlines around the world when he became pregnant as a man, shocking many who had never heard of transgender men before. Fourteen years after his groundbreaking appearance on Oprah, the father of four opened up to TODAY Health about the impact his story had on the trans community, and how he and his family are doing today.
At the time of his first pregnancy in 2007, Thomas was married to Nancy, who had already undergone a hysterectomy and could not have more children. However, as a transgender man who had not undergone surgery to remove his female reproductive organs, Thomas was able to conceive and give birth to their three children, Susan, Austin, and Jensen.
Despite the media attention his pregnancy garnered, Thomas and Nancy's marriage ultimately fell apart in 2012. However, Thomas found new love and in 2016 married Amber, with whom he had a fourth child, Jackson, in 2019.
Today, Thomas works as a stockbroker in Phoenix and is proud of his family. He also wants to continue raising awareness about the transgender community through public speaking, diversity training, writing a second book, and pursuing acting.
Looking back on his journey, Thomas reflects on how much has changed since his story first made headlines. "When my story came out, there wasn't a single person in the public eye as a transgender man - most people had never heard of it," he said. "Now, we have a long way to go, but we've made some strides."
Thomas' story continues to inspire and educate people around the world, shedding light on the experiences of the transgender community and the challenges they face
