Nafdac literally warns Nigerians against cough syrup as it caused death of six children in Cameroon

Nigerians have been warned by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) about a cough medicine known as "Naturcold" that may not be up to par.

The agency said in a statement that the Cameroonian ministry of health had issued an alert about the syrup after it was suspected to be to blame for the deaths of six children under the age of five at a local medical institution.

After consuming the product, which was not authorized for sale in Cameroon, NAFDAC said that the youngsters shown a decline in renal function.

“The product is not in the NAFDAC database, importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers are advised to exercise caution and vigilance within the supply chain to avoid the importation, distribution, sale, and use of the substandard (contaminated) syrups,” the statement reads.

“All medical products must be obtained from authorized/licensed suppliers. The products’ authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked.
